Valldemossa

Valldemossa is a village and municipality on the island of Majorca, part of the Spanish autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. It is famous for one landmark: the Royal Charterhouse of Valldemossa, built in the beginning of the 14th century, when the great mystic and philosopher Ramon Llull lived in this area of Majorca.

Since the 19th century Valldemossa has been promoted internationally as a place of outstanding beauty, largely as a result of the affection of the distinguished traveler and cultural writer, the Austrian Archduke Ludwig Salvator. In the 1830s the Spanish government confiscated the monasteries, and the historic estate was sold to private owners, who have since hosted some prominent guests. These have included the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin and his lover the pioneering French writer George Sand, who wrote a notable account of A Winter in Majorca, describing their 1838–39 visit and praising the island’s natural beauty, but criticizing what she perceived as the prejudice and vices of the natives.

Later the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío was guest of the Sureda y Montaner families who own the Chartreuse estate. To fight his own nightmares, Rubén Dario would sleep in as monks did; however, his drinking habits caused a rift with his private hosts and, eventually, his departure from the former monastery and from Majorca.

You can explore the museum LA CARTUJA, the historic house museum where Chopin lived, and enjoy a 15-minite piano concert.

The Bullring

This bullring is often referred to as the Balearic Colosseum because of its stunning architecture and sweeping arches. It took about 18 months to complete and the very first bullfight happened here on July 1,1929. Notice the typical tiered seating and two shaded viewing galleries that cover the whole circumference of the building. In the summer evenings they also perform open air classical concerts. Even if you are not into bullfighting, the Plaza del Toros is definitely worth a visit simply for the artistic splendor and the stunning architecture that it holds.

The cathedral

When we are done, we will set off to the cathedral. We will pass through Plaza EspañaLa RamblaPaseo del Borne, to get to the old town and its landmarks. We will stop right behind the cathedral. There you will have about 30 to 40 minutes to take a walk and enjoy the beauty of the breathtaking views, to have a closer look at the cathedral and the old town.  The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, more commonly referred to as  La Seu, is a Gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral located in Palma, Majorca, Spain, built on the very site where an Arab mosque stood. It is 121 metres long, 55 metres wide and its nave is 44 metres tall. By way of comparison, the height of the central nave of Notre Dame de Paris reaches 33 m, 38 m in Reims, 42 m in Notre-Dame d’Amiens, and 48 m in Saint-Pierre de Beauvais, the highest of all Gothic cathedrals.

Designed in the Catalan Gothic style but with Northern European influences, it was begun by King James I of Aragon back in 1229, but finished only in 1601. It sits within the old city of Palma atop the former citadel of the Roman city, between the Royal Palace of La Almudaina and the Episcopal Palace. It also overlooks the Parc de la Mar and the Mediterranean Sea.

In 1901, fifty years after the beginning of the restoration of the cathedral, Antoni Gaudí was invited to take over the project. While some of his ideas were readily accepted, such as removal of the choir stalls from the middle nave to take it closer to the altar, as well as the placement of a large canopy, Gaudí abandoned his work in 1914 after an argument with the contractor. The planned changes were essentially cosmetic rather than structural, and the project was cancelled soon after.
Our next stop will be the Bellver Castle

Bellver Castle was built between 1300 and 1311 for King Jaime II of Mallorca. The views from its terraces are spectacular and its circular shape makes it a unique example of European Civil Gothic.

The Mercat d’Olivar

The Mercat de l’Olivar is one of the most important edifices of our city. It is not only the largest but also the most complete market hall in Palma. A stately yet plain building with a light facade, elevating out of the city’s heart and on the route through the old town w
The market hall provides a great and versatile choice of gastronomical choices with freshly prepared dishes, Oysterssushisparkling wine and champagne, wines and liquors which you can find at our stalls, bars, restaurants and cafeterias next to a special area offering different gastronomical events on a regular basis.ith easy access from all four sides.

The tour takes about 2.5 hours. It costs EUR 120.  (1-4 people)

Next stop is Monasterio de Lluc

The Santuari de Lluc is a monastery and pilgrimage site located in the municipality of Escorca in north-west Majorca. The sanctuary was founded in the 13th century after a Moorish shepherd found a statue of the Virgin Mary on the site where the monastery was later erected. Lluc is considered to be the most important pilgrimage site on Majorca. As it is located centrally in the Serra de Tramuntana the monastery is often used as a starting point for walking-tours. Each year, on the first weekend in August, there is a night walk from Palma to the sanctuary. The walk commences at 23:00 hours, leaving from the capital’s Plaça Güell.

Behind the monastery buildings is a botanical garden trail, containing a small exposition on preserving the environment of the Majorcan mountain region.

The last stop is Sa Calobra

Sa Calobra is situated at 38 kilometres from Sóller, between Morro de sa Vaca and Morro de ses Fel.les and below the Puig Major (1445 metres high), the highest mountain of the Balearic Islands.

The highlight of this very small beach with sand, gravel and pebbles comes after the pedestrian tunnel along the steep and abrupt cliffs, from where you can reach the wonderful mouth of the Torrent de Pareis, which has been an inspiration for artists and where there is a choir concert each summer due to the excellent acoustics.

This fact explains that the beach is very popular both for local visitors and tourists on the seaway or on a spectacular road with 14 kilometres of curbs, 12 of 180 degrees and one of 360, known as Nus de sa Corbata (the knot of the tie), with 900 metres difference in level.

The marine and underwater conditions are not good for anchoring boats, because it is exposed to the winds from the northwest-north-northeast, so that this coastal stretch is very dangerous to anchor on a sandy ground with rocks and gravel.

PRICE: 250 euros (1 to 4 persons). 5h
